I had to read this book for a class. It was way too triggering and the graphic details of assault were stressful. “Private Display” hit too close to home.

One of the most interesting and depressing collections of stories I’ve ever read. The art is amazing. I initially wanted to read the first couple of stories before bed and ended up staying awake for a couple of hours, devouring the entire novel.
The stories show the more traumatic sides of humanity and seem to come from experiences of the author or others in their life. It is a very authentic showcase of child abuse, trauma, addiction, and sexual assault. If you have survived any of this, you will connect with this in positive and negative ways.

I had forgotten what a difficult book this is to read. Gloeckner captures the powerlessness of children when adults abuse them sexually and say inappropriate, unhealthy, boundary-crossing things. Directing sexually inappropriate remarks to children is horrifying, and Gloeckner conveys the manipulative head games and the creepiness unflinchingly and directly through her drawings and dialogue
The book is divided into rough sections: childhood, adolescence, and in the back a handful of portfolio illustration pages. The adolescent stories are more about drugs and passivity and the rougher side of the streets of San Francisco.

so very very disturbing. i love the author and her art so very much, and the book is painfully autobiographical. thus only 4 stars. agh! quantitative rating system!
70s children in big bad san francisco, sex and drugs, and cool in the very worst ways.

Really, really good. Incredibly honest and heartbreaking. A beautiful and extremely sad collection that covers some of the worst things in life.

What a raw and brutally honest look at someone's life. Phoebe Gloeckner does not hold back from depicting all of the disturbing and painful experiences she's survived, and it's remarkable to read this account in words and pictures. I read "The Diary of a Teenage Girl" right before picking this one up, and I feel like I got more of the complete story behind several of her traumatic experiences.
I do not recommend this book if you are sensitive to content about abuse, sex, and drugs. If you can stomach the truth, though, then this is an eye-opening read.

I have found my new calling in life - to read comics and graphic novels. My short attention span is being heavily rewarded by Nat Smith and his vast collection.
