This book took me forever to read, but not because I didn’t like it. This is a very busy time in my life but I kept coming back to this book even though I wow. I started it in January. The beginning was rough. I don’t love blood and gore so I almost put it down and left it. But I kept on. I don’t love it as much as the first two books, but once the big turning point happens, things got interesting and I really enjoyed the last half of the book. The narrator was superb. Wonderful accents and voices. Really great.

This is my favorite of the series! Sorinda is such a badass little weirdo with so many layers and I’m so glad Tricia decided to explore her!
Also, this edition is beautiful- I love the cover with the little touches of metallic and putting a blue pattern on the edge of the pages is so cool! Would love to own this one!
My previous biggest issues with these books, the casual gender essentialism, is really not present at all in this one and I deeply appreciate that. I don’t know if Tricia has grown or if she simply didn’t have an opportunity to write it in, but it was refreshing to not have that shoved down my throat. However, there is no queerness to be found really.
I adore the characters, though this one definitely focuses on the main character more than the last two books did. However, I am ok with allowing that to be a Sorinda quirk- she’s just so incredibly in her head and I love that. Her relationship with Kearan is a big pull. Tricia loves writing characters that wouldn’t know romance if it bit them on the nose, and I’m kind of fond of that. I mean, they’re pirates- they have more to focus on than these men who are very obvious in their affections that are not recognized at all.
My only real complaint in this one is how… let’s say, therapized the characters can be. Pirates know what grounding is when it comes to PTSD? Some of that stuff took me out of the story a bit. I think if it was even worded differently than the new age terms we use today, it would have been easier to swallow. But I’m also ok with characters who are messy and lack emotional maturity, they don’t all need to be therapists. Especially pirates. Just no miscommunication tropes please! Which Tricia really doesn’t utilize, and for that, I thank her.
As for the plot, I really wasn’t sure at first where we were headed especially since the first chapter starts is off at a sprint!
When Threydan was introduced, I was wary, but it ended up being a really intriguing storyline! The only thing that didn’t make sense was him not being more forceful, but really I could get past that for the sake of the story. Did I say Sorinda is a badass?
I find myself hoping Tricia will write another book in the series- there are some hints near the end that we may get a book with Niridia and Mandsy which could be really good! Here’s hoping! However, I don’t feel very interested in Tricia’s other work at this time.
