i missed this world!! it was nice to read more about the crew.
the mc, though - she was cool at first but got really annoying really fast.
the writing’s very repetitive, the plot seemed so random and out of place.

THE SHOOTING COMPETITION BETWEEN ALOSA AND RIDEN HAS BEEN A LONG TIME COMING & I'M HERE FOR IT.
I know the author has advertised this as a completed series, but it feels slightly open-ended on purpose. So I think there should be another book AND I think it should be from Mandsy's POV! Mandsy is aroace, and although I enjoy the way Tricia Levenseller writes romance, I love her characters even more... I know that Mandsy would be so fun to write about!! Mandsy is simultaneously sweet, meddling, and badass and I adore her! (Reading the first annotated chapter from Sorinda has completely convinced me that Tricia Levenseller would love this as much as I would.) <3

"You can't be afraid of the dark when you're the monster lurking in the shadows."
I loved the original duology set in the universe of Vengeance of the Pirate Queen, but was a bit disappointed by this spin-off. This book focuses on Sorinda, Alosa's assassin, as she takes on the role of captain on a mission to rescue girls that have disappeared. Sorinda is a closed-off character. It is engrained in her to be as an assassin, however this makes her a poor main character. The first problem is that she does not wish to be a captain; the narration is heavily influenced by the fact, therefore, as a reader, I found myself asking: "If Sorinda herself doesn't want to be here, why should I?" Sorinda refuses to open up to people, and is plagued by the horrors of her past. She is emotionally distant from her crew and puts up a front of valor for them despite whatever troubles her. I found her to not be a very engaging character because of it, and that made it difficult to read for me. I liked her in the original books, but as a main character I felt she lacked a little.
Plot-wise, not a lot happens until about two-thirds of the way through. In stories like this, the plot can progress in two ways. Either the voyage is dangerous and full of obstacles, or the voyage is smooth but the destination in which the treasure rests is what is dangerous. In this book, the voyage is long but only one interesting battle occurs. Then upon getting to their destination, there are no real life-threatening obstacles that the crew must face. Sorinda is the only one in true peril. There are events and bits of action in the journey, but nothing really stood out. There were no big consequences of note such as important characters getting injured in an impactful way, or the gathering of clues to lead to the missing girls.
It was a treat to get glimpses of Alosa and Riden living their lives after everything they've been through!
