"If you were waiting for the opportune moment, that was it." ~ Captain Jack Sparrow (Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl)
The mere childhood memories surfacing when reading this quote make me emotional. Same conclusion as for the other two books: I need to watch the movies again. First thing I need to do when I know the concept of freedom again. Sadly, I didn't like this book as much as the other two.
This book is about Sorinda, the assassin of the pirate queen or as the queen calls her "her vengeance". But her next task is not to kill but captain a handpicked crew, including saling master Kearan, on a rescue mission. Sadly there are few places where Sorinda can hide from the attentive man she is rather annoyed of. When the crew faces dangerous waters and deadly creatures, they accidently awaken the King of the Undersea. There rescue mission quickly becomes more than that and Sorinda must save herself and her crew from the dead.
Honestly, I thought I read the blurb but apparently I have not which I have learned while writing this summary. Which is why I was rather surprised by all the happenings in the book. I mean, that is a good thing. But this book's vibe just was different for me.
I don't dislike Sorinda and Kearan, I just liked the dynamic between Alosa and Riden more. I think Sorinda as a character is very interesting and her whole backstory was well thought through, but her love story with Kearan didn't do it for me.
I really enjoyed Rosalyn as a side character as I did in the last books. Her and Sorinda's dynamic is great.
I am not the biggest fan of the main plot. The whole thing with Threydan, the King of the Undersea, whom she accidentally awakes was kind of wild and random. I can't say exactly why I didn't really like it, it probably was very over the top. Also: a man in a frozen coffin thingy? Yes, that is probably a missing crew member and not some creepy dude. Honestly Sorinda, you could have known better.
Sorinda being the assassin, there is much killing going on which I didn't mind. I like her in the role much better than as a captain. Kind of saw the "solution" at the end coming but it also felt so easy. Like one minute there is this enormous problem and two pages later it is resolved and there are no consequences. I mean there are but there are rather small in comparison. That could have been more exiting.
I still enjoyed the pirate vibe of the book and Sorinda's personal development. I again love the whole "women as pirates", it makes for some very good quotes.

"Don't call me small!" Dimella snaps. "I'm merely in a better position to stab a man where it'll do the most damage." (12%)
