It was a fine read and I understand the hype but it was a bit too cryptic for me if that makes sense? Idk I just didn't love it.
Graphic: Homophobia, Stalking
Moderate: Toxic relationship
I had a similar experience almost a decade ago when I was the same age as Therese. This book made me feel things that I haven’t felt for such a long time. Ending on a positive note is such a fresh breath of air. Afterword by the author made me realize some of the highlights that I haven’t picked up while reading. Will probably reread it when I feel like I need comfort.
There is a quote from famous Russian writer, "Love leaped out in front of us like a murderer in an alley leaping out of nowhere, and struck us both at once." This is what happened when Therese met Carol. Highsmith describes Therese's feelings to Carol in a really sincere and emotional way. The road trip, the description of 50's in the USA, the aside characters - all these things make a really good and alive story. However, I totally disliked Therese. She is completely not the type of personality I can sympathize to. Too locked, too withdrawn. On the other hand, Rooney Mara looks like 100% match to Therese, so may be I will see something that I'd like in Therese in the movie version.
I haven’t seen the movie Carol (based on this book) but, while reading this, I found it impossible to not see Cate Blanchett as Carol: perfect casting. I also couldn’t help thinking of the novel in cinematic terms during a tense scene in the middle of the novel, one involving a detective; empty U.S. highways; and a gun. I don’t believe Highsmith wrote her novels with films in mind, but they do seem to make good ones.
Speaking of the gun, once it was introduced, I kept thinking of Chekhov all through the rest of that road trip. I don’t know if the gun was introduced to thwart expectations, but it did create suspense, and compulsive reading.
I don’t mean to imply this is a thriller. It’s not that at all. It’s more a character study of the young woman whose viewpoint we see everything from, of her emotional awareness as she ages from nineteen to twenty-one. Notably, the men in Therese’s life call her Terry (perhaps I noticed that because that’s never been my nickname); the women do not.

After finally getting round to watching Carol the movie, I then had to read the book. It was surprising reading Therese's internal thoughts since you don't really get to see this in the movie, and book Therese was a lot more different than i expected. It doesn't take too long to read and it is an enjoyable book that you can relax with. I've seen some book reviews where people are not particularly keen on Therese, but I thought her character was written as a realistic and honest representation of what some people her age can be like. I also think good characters aren't always super likeable.
On another note, I have found it difficult to find adult WLW fiction (there seems to be a lot more targeted at YA audience), and I think this fits the category.
Overall, I would recommend reading the book and also watching the movie, they are slightly different but both good.
