Not sure what to think overall. But the description of the relationship between Carol and Therese made me finish it
So understated, a subtle current meant for Highsmith's contemporaries to find their reflections from the ripples within. Even across the better half of a century the whip-sharp dialogue and youthful, un-secure protagonist hit their mark in an incredible way; somewhere behind the telegrams and How do you do?s the unformed shape of Therese's personhood is as recognizable, relatable, immediate as ever.
Someone said they wished this novel were told from the perspective of Carol, but is that not the point? It is precisely this frame - this leaded glass - that reveals as much about what shines from behind as what lies in the glass itself. She doesn't get it, until she does - and the same goes for Carol, her oblique, uncaring gestures a mirror to the irony-poisoned dispassion that rules modern sensibilities. It is in fact this very similarity, the ways in which that we haven't changed - perhaps are incapable are changing from - that enables a careful reconstruction of the 1950s to feel as if it were a mere plane ride away.
There's a moment, some 200-odd pages in, when I suddenly felt that I got it. But, I realize now, it was not until I read the final sentence that I even neared whatever was locked within; one to return to.

I wanted to like this more than I did. The story was good but the characters fell flat for me. I neither loved them nor hated them. I kept waiting to get drawn in by one of them, to be endeared, to root for...the connection was never there. Now that the book has been read, I shall watch the movie.

it's wild because considering the fact that not a lot of action occurred plot-wise and since i usually require a lot of it in order to keep me engaged, i was still so very engrossed by the stories and the characters.
