highsmith’s turn of phrase goes largely unmatched. she knows exactly what details to highlight in order to bring scenes alive to her readers. her depth and complexity of characterization is fantastic. as a lesbian, i enthusiastically approve.

It's difficult to figure out how to describe this book. It's both fast paced and slow, the relationship evolves quickly and at a snail's pace. The characters aren't inherently what I would call lovable, but they're incredibly interesting to read about. It's not a healthy dynamic by any means and that makes it all the more fascinating.

Some folks are saying the ending was sweet, but I completely disagree. Therese thinks she's matured to the point that she can now handle Carol and not be manipulated around, but that's not true. She had what? A handful of weeks away from Carol? Not nearly enough time in my opinion to undo any hooks of manipulation that are in Therese. The ending of this book feels more like a warning. You can see the rest of Therese's life with Carol unfold in the same vicious cycle of Carol reaching for and shoving Therese away in the same pattern that this whole story unfolded. Therese was Orpheus, almost able to escape, but at the very last minute she turned around.

All in all, I believe this story is a very fitting depiction of an obsessive unhealthy relationship that disguises itself as a beautiful love.

I wanted to re read this book the moment I finished it. Lesbian canon.
