The writing was eloquent yet this world seemed to exist in black and white for some reason. Like a cold winter day. It was passionate yet dull… Therese seemed to be almost addicted to a drug in her relationship to Carol. Not sure I would read again, but glad I read it.
What a great read! I could barely put it down!
This is a love story between a young woman and a older woman that starts with a slightly obsessive infatuation on the part of the young woman and turns into something more for the both of them. The imagery, the emotion, and the subtle poetry throughout the book make this one of my favorite reads of the year so far.
The character development is fantastic and I really love the way that Therese comes into herself by the end. We get to watch her mature in a way that I imagine many of us can relate to, finding herself involved in these relationships that ultimately teach her a lot about herself, what she wants, and what she deserves. I appreciate that the reader gets to see the world from Therese’s point of view because in a way, we get the satisfaction of seeing not only her behavior change, but the way she thinks change too.
Carol’s character was equally complex and while we didn’t get to see what was going on in her mind, her actions and Therese’s insights told us a lot about who she was beyond the exterior. The insecurity that Therese so clearly displays is certainly hidden under the surface with Carol and to see the power dynamic almost flip by the end of the story confirms more of this true for us to see clearly. She is glamorous and haughty even, but underneath she wants the same things that Therese does, only she’s not so vulnerable to ask for it the same way.
I love how this story comes together and I hope to find more like it! This is a great story and there’s much to be found throughout that will spark inspiration, thought, and even a little warmth.

I watched the film first. Then I adventured myself into this book, fearing it wouldn't be as I expected. I was wrong. I can't believe this book is this old yet it has all the intensity, all the emotions really out there and with an elegance that blew my mind. The film is a thing but dear the deep love and desire expressed in these pages couldn't be greater.
I really enjoyed the book, I loved it.

Okay first of all ☝️ The film misled me to believe I was getting a milf book and Carol is actually only thirty to thirty-two , so let's get that out of the way. I was upset when I realised I was a decade older than the "older woman" in this relationship 😅
Anyway, I really loved this. Both Therese and Carol are deeply flawed and real characters who were so interesting to read about. Since we hear everything from Therese's perspective we know about her interior life and her deep insecurities and fears, and I find her really relatable, because hey, my mood too often changes on a dime because someone looked at me weird or said something in a tone that I am now assigning an intense meaning to and I'll have to think about it for hours, even though it probably meant nothing. And Therese, at nineteen, is practically a kid, she has an excuse 😅
But Carol also has her flaws, which Therese(for most of the book at least) is pretty blind to, but which we the readers can identify more easily.
And it doesn't actually matter, because no one is perfect anyway, and the story isn't about two perfect people falling in love, but two women loving each other as they are, despite the world doing its best to interfere.

Graphic: Alcohol
Moderate: Homophobia, Sexual assault, Lesbophobia
Sexual assault: The book describes the several attempts Therese makes at having sex with her boyfriend after he pesters and cajoles her into it, and how extremely painful it is and how much she cries and how her crying makes him feel guilty. The language is not very graphic, but the book does not portray this as assault which is upsetting.
