I went into this expecting to be disappointed because the 2015 film is absolutely phenomenal - turns out the book is absolutely phenomenal as well. I love this book, I feel this book, I want to read this book over and over again until I know every word, until it is a part of me.

I read this book just a few days after seeing the movie Carol, which, of course was based on this book. It is quite a comparison. The movie is paced so leisurely, the, at least at first is so frenetic. Almost Kerouacian its pacing that every once in a while you need to stop reading just to catch your breath. The movie seems to be set mostly in New York, or at least that is how it felt to me. The book, on the other hand, spends most of its time on the road (there's Kerouac again). The movie is luscious and drenched in color, the mental picture you get from the book seems mostly washed out.

But enough with the comparisons. How was the book? Not bad actually. Not really my cup of tea, but I am happy to have read it.

What an interesting cycle of motherless daughters and daughterless mothers looking to fill the void with lesbianism and a questionable age gap.

Therese wants to be a stage designer but to make ends meet she works in a department store during the Christmas rush. There she meets the sophisticated Carol and can’t forget her. They start up a friendship which leads into a relationship of sone kind.
At the same time Carol is getting a divorce and her love for Carol turns into a problem when it comes to custody of her daughter.
So Therese and Carol set out across the US, followed by a private investigator trying to catch them in a promiscuous situation.
The book was written in the early 50s and needed to be published under a different name. It is supposed to show the sweetness of love and the danger of a homosexual love affair. And still, I couldn’t really get into it. I couldn’t relate to the characters. I didn’t really like them or wanted to know what would happen.
