I'm glad I read this because of its reputation as one of the first published American novels with blatant lesbians in it (and, furthermore, ones who receive a happy ending), but I struggled to see much chemistry between Carol and Therese. They were sweet and they had cute moments, but I was frustrated with Therese's lack of personality and it made it difficult to enjoy the book as a whole. The plot was also quite slow-going and I had to pick up an audiobook version for a few chapters so I could get through it easier.
I think this novel still has a lot within it that could be discussed- I think it would be interesting to read for a book club- but reading it alone discouraged me, perhaps because it was so historically accurate to how it felt to be queer during such a time. I am at least glad to be living to see better days.

As a lover of the film it was lovely to gain more insight into the original ideas of Carol & Therese <3
la segunda parte de este libro tiene un ímpetu que solo es capaz de producir un amor tan bello y peligroso al mismo tiempo como el de therese y carol. una gran lectura.

This book was a page turner for me, in spite of the slow beginning and the minimal chemistry between the main characters for most of the book. The story and the writing drew me in. Beautiful ending.

i love how patricia highsmith writes queer limerence
This should have been perfect for me - lesbians, age gap, class difference, Highsmith, everything I could want. Ripley was a 10/10 for me so I was really looking forward to this, but I just felt bored and thought that Carol was the least interesting character, so I struggled to understand Therese's feelings. Haven't seen the movie yet but I will.
