I can't finish this. I worked really hard to get past the unfortunate font choice and (faux?) lousy print job, but halfway through the sheer boredom of the story made me skip ahead and finally give up.
Here's what it's about: a whiny, mousy 19-year-old woman-child with no self confidence or ambition meets a rich, older woman and becomes promptly obsessed with her. Nothing happens for pages and pages. Then they go on a trip, where more nothing continues to happen, except that once in a while it seems as if something is *about* to happen---but no. Or perhaps something happened and I missed it, having nodded off.
The characters are not likeable. The story is tedious. I wonder if the font and layout are purposely challenging to give the impression of an illicit pamphlet in an attempt to mask the incredibly dull book.

I wish i could give this book 10/5, this is such a personal, beautiful story. I grew up in my younger teenage years watching the movie adaptation, which is wonderful in its own right, but the book is so much more meaninful. Particia Highsmith was so ahead of her time in this, and captured such intimate feelings and emotions of lesbian romance. i see myself rereading this many times over. I love being a lesbian <3

A beautifully written story about first love. Therese and Carol are characters you would remember. In a way, the novel in a ode to Carol and I am glad the movie from this was so well made and aptly titled Carol. The novel is from Therese's perspective, but it feels like the protagonist of the novel is Carol.
*spoilers ahead*
I loved that this was one of the first queer novels written with a happy ending. The time in which this came out was pre-Stonewall and I can only imagine the impact this novel would have had on the LGBTQIA+ community back then. Therese's infatuation with Carol is captured captivatingly. I loved that there was a character arc to her relationship with Carol within her arc. She transforms from a girl into a woman even as her obsession with Carol matures into love.
I am glad this novel is finally being recognized for the classic that it is.
