It took some time for me to get into the book but in the second half it really didn’t let me go. Remarkable book that knows what is is - an all-American tragic love story, that doesn’t end tragic at all.
It’s beautifully written but nothing happens in this book. The whole relationship is awkward and I really struggled to finish it

For a book written in 1952, it was probably pretty controversial and steamy. For 2011, it's understated, but perhaps still enough for homophobes to accuse liberals of promoting the homosexual agenda. Sigh. Given the historical context, I should probably give it 5 stars, but I'm sticking with 4. It was a good discussion at Politics & Prose's "Lez Read" book club.
Pretended there was no age gap cause I don’t fw that, but incredibly great and gay
“Was life, we’re human relations like this always, Therese wondered. Never solid ground underfoot. Always like gravel, a little yielding, noisy so the whole world could hear, so one always listened, too, for the loud, harsh step of the intruders foot.”

I like reading the novels before I see the film, and the upcoming film inspired by this book is one that I definitely want to see.
Knowing that this book was written in the Fifties makes it better, more appreciated.
It is the tale of a young woman in NYC, who falls in love with an older woman she happens to wait on in her mundane department store job.
Not much happens in the book, but we are privy to the torrent of emotions going through the young girl's mind as she struggles to understand her own feelings as well as those of her wizened paramour.
I liked it and it's a quick read. I also found it fascinating that the word "gay" is not used once.
