Set in the 1950’s, the story of Therese, a young, unhappy woman who meets and falls in love with an older, married, wealthy woman, Carol. Therese is unsure of herself and tortures herself with anxiety about Carol’s intentions. They embark on a road trip together, running from Carol’s husband, chased by a private eye. Therese’s feelings are intense;this is not your typical happy-go-lucky story. The details from the long ago time period are perfect.
Maybe I expected more, so I was left with crubles and almost nothing. I was a bit mad at the end, but it wasn't that bad.
Absolutely iconic. I loved how she described her feelings it really felt like I was sucked into love.
Published in 1952 (originally under a pseudonym because it was queer) it's a powerful insight into perceptions of lesbian relationships at that time. It's also written so beautifully. Much more tension and humour than in the film. Glad to be out n proud in 2024 :)

Gorgeous. Was surprisingly more like a thriller than a romance to read. Cate Blanchett was on my mind throughout (new appreciation for the film having read the book). Can be summarised as “Carol lay on the bed and lit a cigarette”.
Huh so the whole book is a story of a 19 year old obsessed with a woman she fell in love with at first sight, who does anything and everything to be with her? And of course the older woman is emotionally unavailable because she’s so preoccupied with her divorce and fighting to keep her kid. I found their relationship hard to root for mostly because the two characters lacked depth.
Still giving it 3 stars because I recognize the historical significance and I didn’t find myself bored with the writing.
