This was my first introduction to Patricia Highsmith but it will definitely not be my last. Her writing is gorgeous and evocative. This book is the definition of a slow burn. It takes its time establishing the relationship between Carol and Therese. It draws you in slowly and luxuriously. And then it all hits in a sudden rush and you find yourself completely enveloped and invested in these characters and praying it will all work out. Carol and Therese felt like real people. They didn't feel like caricatures at all. And also, this is a book about queer love that doesn't end in tragedy. What a happy treat that was! I'll have to make sure and find some of Highsmith's other works now. What a real find she is!
4.75/5
I can see myself in Therese, which makes sense since I'm around her age right now. I, too, would flock to the milfs.
A lot of people seem to dislike Carol, and that's valid, but for me, I don't think she is in the right mental space for much rn. She was a bit bitchy but I think that's due to her circumstances.
I did a buddy read, so this was my whole paragraph on Carol:
I think that Carol genuinely loves Therese, but I think she doesn't know how to cope. After all, she *is* grieving. She may not have loved Harg after a while, but you can still grieve a bad relationship. During her marriage, she was also grieving what she actually wanted. She's been grieving for a long time. And she takes it out a bit on Therese, not often, but that still doesn't make it good. I think she's also scared of commitment, maybe from Harg, maybe just societal expectations. I think she wants to be in a lasting relationship, but she's very scared to. Even with Abby, she may have been scared. It makes sense why she brought a gun; she's not really okay. Especially with the custody of Rindi. If she doesn't want a long relationship, that should've also been communicated earlier since that's what Therese wanted, but again, I think she's scared of losing everyone she ever loved.
