2.5 stars!

I wanted to love this but I just found the writing to be so cliche. At times it felt beautiful but mostly it felt like the author was trying too hard to sound beautiful and lyrical. I don't know. I feel bad saying that because a lot of people love this book but it was just "okay" to me. I never really connected with any of the characters, and I disliked Carol for the majority of it (pretty much until the very end).

I think this may be one of those books where the longer I think about it, the more I might like (or dislike it). Right now I feel like it's between a 2 and 3 stars but since I skimmed the last 50 pages, I'll stick to my 2 star rating right now.

I listened to the audiobook version of The Price of Salt, and I wasn't disappointed I had. A lush reading of a lush story. I was surprised that this was the work of a "pulp novelist". Exquisite detail and a surprising level of depth and introspection. The story dips its toes into issues of class and youth, but its strongest aspect is its same-sex love story with its intimate knowledge and portrayal of so many of the obstacles such love faces yet today.

I've never read love described like this. But what was described in this book, the way Therese described Carol, is exactly the way I feel about someone. And my heartbeat got faster and I teared up as Therese said 'I love you.' to Carol for the first time.
A book that is extremely beautifully written and powerful. It tells you what falling in love is, what being happy with someone is, and tells you what heartbreak is. But at the end, nothing would beat true love.
As Highsmith pointed out in the afterwords, it's rare to have a happy ending for a LGBT book. But that's what's great about this book. It tells you a story about two people in love and tell you that there is always hope.
Therese grew up because of Carol. Because of loving Carol. Because her heart got broken by Carol. Carol grew up because of Therese. Because she loves Therese and she learns what bravery is from Therese. She learns what love is from Therese.
My favourite romance for sure.

I have a newfound appreciation for Patricia Highsmith upon reading this novel, which is quite a gripping love story between 2 women. The fact it was written and published in the 1950's, when same-sex relationships were so much more 'taboo' than they are today, astounds me - Highsmith doesn't hold back too much in her narrative. While I found her novel, "Strangers on a Train" lacking (I liked the Hitchcock film much more), I really enjoyed "The Price of Salt". Highsmith explores and articulates the burgeoning relationship between Therese, a young NYC shopgirl and set designer, and Carol, the beautiful socialite of her immediate affections, in a beautifully wrought and intensely emotional way. Therese presents a very conflicted protagonist who comes into her own with the development of the relationship. Despite the obstacles presented to them along the way throughout the book - Carol's getting a divorce and her struggle to maintain custody of her young daughter being a main one - you sincerely root for these two women to find their happy ending together. Highsmith suggests that this is possible. Looking forward to seeing Todd Haynes' film adaptation of this novel, "Carol", come the end of the year, with Cate Blanchett as Carol and Rooney Mara as Therese, in performances already being highly praised in advance showings at film festivals. Recommended read.

I will be reading this in July 2015 as a part of my 2015 Book to Film Challenge. Feel free to play along!

Read with my book club and almost didn't finish it. Glad I did, it picked up toward the end.
