What really got me about this book, aside from the revolutionary fact that it's a lesbian romance in the 1950s, is the historical context. It's not historical fiction, but because of when it was written, we get some very interesting snapshots of what life was like before modern technology, especially modern communication tech.

On the queerness of this book, while the main characters do face forced heteronormativity, the fact that it's never in question that they are both women who love women is very refreshing.

and while there are complications and backlash in the end, they get to be happy together. There's no death, Therese goes back to Carol, and they get to be together.

An early lesbian novel. I'm not sure how I missed this one. Dykes and a road trip! What's not to love?

‘It would be Carol, in a thousand cities, a thousand houses, in foreign lands where they would go together, in heaven and in hell.’

Every time a woman loves another woman cancer is cured in an alternate universe <3

(Cried my eyes out during the afterword)

Patricia Highsmith, on this novel, said "Prior to this book, homosexuals male and female in American novels had had to pay for their deviation by cutting their wrists, drowning themselves in a swimming pool, or by switching to heterosexuality (so it was stated), or by collapsing - alone and miserable and shunned -into a depression equal to hell."

Interesting to read the first lesbian romance book that isn't a tragedy, but wasn't 100% my cup of tea. Well written tho!
