This is only the second time that I've felt the movie is better than the book, the other being jaws.
I did enjoy the road trip parts of the book, mainly because I enjoy road trips in general. The main thing I had trouble with is the two main characters. I felt both were pretty unlikable in different ways.

Pleasantly surprised with The Price of Salt, a novel with charming characters and a nuanced premise. I’d say it was perfect but I felt in needed just a little bit more stress in its climax. Still, a wonderfully hopeful ending which is rare for queer lit. I really enjoyed the prose as there was an almost theatrical quality to it that was layered with the Therese’s interiority. The way that Highsmith wrote scenes around inanimate objects reminded me of Lispector (and the milk!)

I really loved this book. The central relationship was between two women, and, yes, they are more than friends. The relationship could have been a male-female affair, because, all love affairs have the same issues. But, this book does not tease, it is a serious exploration of needs and desires and hard choices.

The writing is sharp but in no hurry. I enjoyed details of elevator rides, phone calls, and bank checks. The narrator is trying to make it a go of it in NYC, pursuing a job in theater. In the meanwhile, she takes a holiday job at a large department store. Eventually, she meets a compelling customer, and the two women go off on a great road trip. (This book is as a great as Thelma and Louise, Lolita, Travels with Charlie by Mr. Steinbeck. On the Road, Mr. Jack K...)

I do not know if the ending held up, but it was still a great book.

people who don’t understand therese just aren’t real yearners like me

Davvero un libro meraviglioso. Stile di scrittura scorrevole e che ti cattura subito. Ho letto l'ultimo capitolo piangendo perché, tra le altre cose, non volevo terminarlo. Un bellissimo finale per una bellissima storia d'amore.

on one hand i think what this book did for queer literature was really important so obviously that is a good thing. it was reaallly slow at parts though and i also didn't feel much chemistry/connection between carol and therese to be honest? but it also was still a good book. so idk. also i have a small bone to pick with my edition of it because the jacket summary gives away kind of like everything.

not my favourite iwl. took me 5ever to get through partly because of my slump but also because i simply was not invested in the characters. the age gap honestly isn’t even my biggest gripe with this book. i think the commentary on the fleetingness of romantic obsession could have been good and probably would’ve bumped my rating up to 3.5, but (spoiler alert)
the 180 at the end ruined that for me. had therese simply moved on overnight and become engrossed with this actress, i honestly think that would’ve been the better ending (kind of reminiscent of the summer->autumn pipeline in 500 days of summer if you get me).
there were definitely some powerful lines in here and i can definitely see why it’s a lesbian cult classic, it’s just unfortunately not for me
