Patricia Highsmith is a fascinating writer. Understated, sometimes mundane, dialogue paired with such rich narration.
3.5 I think I might have read this at the wrong time, and if I had been in the mood for something more introspective and internal I may have enjoyed it more. I did enjoy this more as it went along.

If you like the movie this is definitely worth the read. I loved being able to put the scenes to the book. And the characterization is actually kind of different than the movie. it was interesting to see why they changed what they did.
Stream of consciousness: I keep thinking about this book in relation to Daphne du Maurier's Rebecca. Even with full knowledge that it's a happy ending with the protagonist and Carol reuniting, seeing Therese's way of living after their split and before their reunion I kept thinking about the climactic scene in Rebecca after the protagonist expels her (Rebecca) from her mind, where she 'cleans house', ordering flowers and food, doing as she pleases, renewing her life. I'm not sure Carol (the character) is a benevolent force or even meant to be, even though it's clearly a happy ending.
Carol was a bit of a dick but I still think she deserved better.
i liked the book, just didnt really relate to the characters or feel super invested. i do think taking your girlfriend on a month long road trip out west is always a great idea though!
