My that was long, but I liked it. The novel tells the story from Rhett's side. I particularily enjoyed learning about how the Civil War and Reconstruction shaped the South. It is probably more like a 3.5.
This book was an insult to the mystery shrouded character made famous by Margaret Mitchell, and expressed a deep misunderstanding of what little characterization we had of Rhett Butler.
I ama HUGE fan of the book [b:Gone With The Wind|18405|Gone With The Wind|Margaret Mitchell|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1166913011s/18405.jpg|3358283]. I had to read "Scarlett" when it 1st came out, and I had to read Rhett Butler's people when it came out. i really enjoyed the book. it was well written and its always fun to read a beloved story from another person's point of view.

I really like this book. It gave you Rhett's perspective and his family background while still being true to [b:Gone with the Wind|18405|Gone With The Wind|Margaret Mitchell|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1166913011s/18405.jpg|3358283].
I really hesitated to read this book because I loved GWTW so much and there were so many bad reviews but I had finished Scarlett and just wasn’t ready to say goodbye to Scarlett and Rhett. There are a lot of things that I really disliked about this book that I thought took too much liberty with the original story such that it wasn’t consistent with the spirit of GWTW. However, there were also some really cool moments that I thought fit well with the original story and gave some background that made sense particularly, what put Rhett in jail. I disagree that Melanie doesn’t act like herself in this book. I don’t want to spoil it but she’s candid about marital relations in a letter and honestly, I don’t think that’s too far fetched for a woman who so easily lied about her husband getting caught at Belle Watling’s. I also think the author did a better job with Rhett’s activity after “my dear I don’t give a damn” than the Scarlett sequel. There are some major story points that he skipped from Rhett’s perspective (Bonnie’s death and Scarlett’s fall down the stairs) that I think really could have been developed into an interesting read but you don’t get that with this book. Don’t read it thinking it’s going to be as good as GWTW but if you are itching for more of Rhett and Scarlet then it is worth your time.
Great, entertaining, nostalgic read! The first third was a little hard to catch the flow of, but it was worth the wait. True to the characters. Cant wait to read Mammy's People.
As a work of historical fiction, I would have gladly given this novel 3 stars. It doesn't particularly matter to me that my view of some of the GWTW characters is quite different from Mr McCaig's: once characters start to live in our minds they inevitably develop differently.
What does matter to me, and why the book only ended up with two stars, is that too many loose ends were tied off. In short, the package was too neatly presented.

I liked having closure for Rhett and Scarlett but I didn't particularly like the writing style.
