I enjoyed this story—and it's one of the few Christie books where I've guessed whodunnit* and why—but it's a lesson in public domain publishing as well. The copy that I read was an ebook I picked up cheap with "public domain" listed as the publisher, and the quality is very poor. Sentence and paragraph breaks in odd places were the worst offender. So, note to self: pay a little more next time and get a copy published by someone willing to put their name on it. I would have enjoyed this story more, I feel, had I not been reading such a poor quality copy of it. (Side note: the cover image on my copy is NOT the one shown here.)

* one of whodunnit, anyway

I did not realize how long Christie’s career was! This was published in 1969! Unfortunately it seems I like her earlier work a lot better. There was a lot of moaning and groaning from these characters about how “things aren’t like they used to be.” Eye roll. I can’t say much without spoilers, but the premise of the mystery was pretty interesting, though the twisty ending seemed so out of left field? There wasn’t as much foreshadowing (that I picked up on anyway), so I felt a bit confused at the end.

This was my first experience reading a Christie novel and I’m so disappointed. I hope others are better. With the author’s renown, I was hoping
the killer wouldn’t be the person who was established to have motive, means, and opportunity in the first few pages,
but unfortunately it was. You could read only the first few and last two chapters of this book and it wouldn’t take away from the plot.

This book was very slowing to read and I found it very boring and uninteresting too. I appreciated the story and the way it’s told it just wasn’t sadly the book for me. Some of the characters were also so annoying and irritating and I really didn’t understand the plot or mystery of this book at all. This was my 1st Agatha Christie book and probably my last one too. I understand why people do like it and do enjoy it xxx

This book was fine I guess. I did not feel especially attached to any of the characters. It was a lot of moralizing about "kids these days" and also a lot of characters said the same exact thing over and over? We get it! You all think that they are letting to many people out of the asylums.

I read it because I wanted to know what happened, but I don't feel any need to read any more Agatha Christie.
