Beautifully written with very intricate world building. Found the first half to be slow but the second half was intense. Unique story and characters, will read the sequel.
In the beginning, I wasn't sure how I'd like it. It had good moments in the beginning, but it also dragged and had quite a bit of filler chapters. I wasn't going to give up on it, but I was definitely going to rate it lower. As I kept reading and seeing those snippets of foreshadowing, it started to pick up and I enjoyed it much more than I thought. I really enjoyed the worldbuilding and the prose was just right, minus the filler chapters. The romance was pretty meh to me. I ended up skipping those parts because there's much better to the story then Lazlo and Sarai falling in love at first sight.
Overall, I enjoyed it more than I thought. It has flaws but I was able to look past it and enjoy the worldbuilding and the complex characters. I'd read the sequel just to get more of the lore if nothing else.

This book is so beautifully perfect. I absolutely raced through it and now I crying.
What I loved
#1 The mysteries! This book had so many secrets and mysteries and plot twists and ooohhh it's just good! There are some secrets that aren't resolved (but the most important ones all got resolved, don't worry) so I'm super excited for the next book!
#2 The characters. There are quite a few characters in this that have a serious amount of depth! Honestly, I have not read a book with so many GOOD secondary characters in ages (Harry Potter is the ONLY other one that springs to mind).
#3 The romance. Without being too spoilery, I LOVED the romance in this book. It was so sweet and beautiful and it made me just want to wrap them up in a blanket!
#4 The plot. Long books make me a little apprehensive because they're often pretty slow moving, but this was NOT one of those books. There was so much going on - I was never ever bored! The story does spend some time fleshing out the characters and their relationships rather than focusing on the plot, but this actually added to the story. Normally when writers do that I'm just itching to get back to the action, but it was done SO WELL and I enjoyed it so much!
I honestly can't think of a bad thing to say about this book. I need the next one like right now please Laini?

the book started great and I had a lot of fun reading it but at some point it just lost my interest
the insta love plot line kinda dragged the whole thing down
however I respect the author choice tokinda kill of sarai , it made an interesting plot point and really made the end of the book stand out

Between the violence of the first chapter and the centrality of sexual violence to the plot, I’m a bit surprised that this is a YA novel.
But, I really enjoyed how different it was from anything else I’ve ever read. Very imaginative!

Wow!!! I'm shocked. I couldn't put this book down. I finished it in less than 2 days.
