the book started great and I had a lot of fun reading it but at some point it just lost my interest
the insta love plot line kinda dragged the whole thing down
however I respect the author choice to
kinda kill of sarai
, it made an interesting plot point and really made the end of the book stand out

Between the violence of the first chapter and the centrality of sexual violence to the plot, I’m a bit surprised that this is a YA novel.

But, I really enjoyed how different it was from anything else I’ve ever read. Very imaginative!

Second reading: Still fabulous, still loved it!

Wow!!! I'm shocked. I couldn't put this book down. I finished it in less than 2 days.

DID NOT FINISH

I just couldn’t get into the storyline. It switches between characters leaving me confused.

I had a difficult time connecting to this story and the characters in it, that’s not to say that the story was bad necessarily but it lacked the ability to really draw me in from the start. I felt like the story was interesting particularly more towards the end and the writing was beautiful and well done but wish it had the spark that draws so many to love this book like they do. Not sure if I’ll continue the series yet, perhaps I’d like to retry this book again before moving forward at a future time when I feel I may be more interested in it, but for now it wasn’t really it for me unfortunately!

When you’ve read as much fantasy as I have, you start to notice patterns. Predictable plot lines. This book, though? Everything felt new. Absolutely gorgeous writing, a unique and heartbreaking central conflict, villains that you can’t help but feel sympathy for, a world rich in culture and history. My only complaint is that some scenes felt dragged out while others flitted by much too quickly. Most of the action takes place in the final 100 pages, but honestly, I was so swept up in the magic and the dreaminess of the writing that I can’t complain too much.

This is a very cool concept and easier to understand than I thought it would be. A lot of characters bothered me with their choices, some of the descriptions were a bit “TMI”, and the middle middled. However, the last act really caught my attention with all the twists. The dialogue was really fun to read. :)
