I love Laini Taylor so I’m not sure why this took me so long to read. Slapping 5 stars on it because it made me laugh and cry and thoroughly entranced me and I immediately went and borrowed the sequel on Libby
So close to a 5 star YA read. The only thing keeping it back is my strong dislike for insta-love (although this might be the best depiction of it I’ve ever read and almost won me over).
Reads like a great mix of Sabaa Tahir, Brandon Sanderson, S.A. Chakraborty, and Rebecca Ross.

thoroughly enjoyable. ends on a cliffhanger but just use your imagination
Omg.... Where to start. Such a fun story to read, about an orphan who was raised by monks who wouldn't stop dreaming of the impossible... A lost City believed by most to only be a fairytale, a godslayer and blue half God's... This story plays with your emotions... One min you think someone is horrible, the next you feel bad for them and then you find yourself understanding all sides and not sure what you want to happen.
"You think good people can't hate?" she asked. "You think good people don't kill?"[...}"Good people do all the things bad people do, Lazlo. It's just that when they do them, they call it justice." This quote from the book is exactly what you realize throughout the whole story.
And then the ending... Which isn't the end because there is another book... But it left me saying "omg" to myself a few times... And if the story wasn't enough to make this book great, the word description in this book is simply beautiful...
"There were two mysteries, actually: one old, one new. The old one opened his mind, but it was the new one that climbed inside, turned several circles, and settled in with a grunt—like a satisfied dragon in a cozy new lair. And there it would remain—the mystery, in his mind—exhaling enigma for years to come."
Seriously, read it... I'm going out to get myself the next one :)

My heart was ripped out of my god damn chest and I am happy about it. Thank you Laini Taylor for this viscerally beautiful and scarring book that I will now go buy a hard copy of and put on my favourites shelf.
Gah, that ending! I'm slayed!
This book surprised me because I wasn't all that sure I would like it. It definitely took me a while to get into it, but by the end, I was fully involved and frantically reading page after page because I needed to see what would happen. I only wish I had my own copy of this book so I could pass it on to my daughter to read - I think this is one she would enjoy. Can't wait for the next one!
