Stunning and emotional journey through generations of a Korean family. The pace is slow at times, but the numerous characters are well-developed and easy to connect to. It also showed me a side of Korean/Japanese relations that I never knew about.

This book is fantastic and well worth every bit of praise and acclaim it has got. The story of Sunja and her family is compelling, joyful, heartwarming, heartbreaking and every other emotion you can think of. It does have a distinct feeling of melancholy throughout too.

As a Latina living in the US, I had very little exposure to the complex history of Korea and Japan. This was eye opening on all Koreans have unjustly endured and how they have fought against discrimination and colonization. 

It was inspiring while heartbreaking.  The strongest characters are the women through tout the novel who give so much of themselves for the sake of their community and families. The treatment of women, the degree of agency they have as years go by, the ability to live as they wish, motherhood. their sexuality is all front and center. 

This book was also heartbreaking but ended in such an inspiring note. 

It was an incredible epic that will stay with me for a long time.

Incredible read, Min Jin Lee does an excellent job introducing you to characters and lets you get to know them over time. Every single one of them has their own well thought out story that all ties together the complexities of the challenges that one Korean family had to face through the generations living in Japan.
