I think it’s a good introduction to talking to children about the Holocaust but that’s probably it. It was very hard to get into the story as none of the characters were fleshed out or realistic. I did however appreciate the subtlety of some things mentioned as if through a child’s eyes even if that child is much younger than their age.

I don't know how to rate this book. It is well written but it is hard to say I like it, due to the subject matter. Honestly, I did not choose to read this book, I lead a book discussion group with fifth graders and they chose it. I have read many holocaust novels about kids and teens and every one of them is heartbreaking. It tears me up that this is our history and that the further we move into the present and future the more we seem to let this history slip. We must never forget or see this time in our history as just stories in a book.
I watched the movie when it came out so I knew what was going to happen in the book. So I wasn't hit as hard by the senselessness of the events as I have with other books. Maybe rating it would be easier if I hadn't already know how it ended.

It was a good book, but I have never thought about it.

This book is good, but it is hard to connect to.
