I have complicated feelings about this book, because I first was read the story at the end of fourth grade, and that's where I got the copy I read again now. I think it's a plenty fine story, but the issues come with the framing of it and the audience it is typically shown to. If you already know about the Holocaust, this book does no harm, it just provides a unique (while unrealistic) perspective on the historical atrocity. Young audiences, where this might be their first introduction to this historical event, will gain a far too light perspective on the time-period. The importance of learning history, and even learning from historical fiction, is to know enough in order to learn the lesson of not letting it repeat. No one book should be responsible for all of that, but no one book should lighten the reality so severely as this one.

feels weird to give this book a rating but... i honestly just felt sad.
it was hard to root for Bruno/his family but him being a child made it extra difficult to find fault in him.
and that ending was brutal....
definitely a really worth it read

Good plot, but I didn't care for the writing style.
I can't believe it took me this long to read this book. It was amazing. Beautifully written and so smart, and I loved how it was written from Bruno's (age 9) perspective.
