Poignant and heart wrenching. Don't be put off because people say it's a sad book - it's a fable. A moral tale that makes you laugh in parts and cry in others. Seeing it through a child's eyes reminds me of the absurdity of it. Unfortunately that continues in this 'day and age'. That is the lesson I take away from it.

The end of this book felt like a slap to the face. Literally it left me staring horrified at my phone. And I don't mean in a good way.
First of all the basis on which this entire book was built upon is flimsy as heck. I can only suspend disbelief so much, and the fact that I was supposed to believe that a son of high ranking military official grew till he was nine years old without ONCE hearing the word Jew eVER....
It disgusts me if that is the sort of intelligence the author thinks children have.
And come on! Shmuel is nine years old, he should've known that it's a concentration camp even if Bruno didn't.
Bruno mishearing Fuhrer and Auschwitz despite seeing them WRITTEN DOWN... are we sure this kid is actually german?
The British humour in this felt out of place and idk I didn't enjoy this book as much as I would have liked to. Relative fame=/=Good book is what I've learnt today.

Ugly cried in the last chapter
What a compelling story that brings the harsh realities and the hidden truth of the Holocaust to a level teens can grasp. I found myself near tears at times. The ending was quite a shocker.
This is a must read for anyone who enjoys historical fiction, is studying the Holocaust or enjoys heart wrenching stories.
