Very nice. Ending bit rushed

I read this years ago as a teenager and absolutely adored it, it's still sitting on my shelves. I must give it a read again. Truly fantastic.

AUDREY'S ONE-SENTENCE BOOK REVIEWS

you ever read something and KNOW you'll be thinking about it for the rest of your life, because that's how I felt when I reached "life is one huge lottery where only the winning tickets are visible"

I may never look at a deck of cards the same way again. The Solitaire Mystery is another imaginative, clever, and thought-provoking philosophical tale by Jostein Gaarder. This time, the protagonist is a 12-year-old boy named Hans Thomas, a bright boy who is quickly exiting childhood and trying to make sense of the world around him.

This story does not have too much in common with Sophie's World--it's much more like a fairy tale. I did not expect this, and yet--I enjoyed it very much, and thought it worked very well, in its own way. Eventually, I'd like to read more of Gaarder's novels.

Excuse me, may I have your Joker?

Good read!

DID NOT FINISH: 15%

I added this to my shelf in 2016, because about 30 years ago I read Sofies Welt and thought it was an excellent book, conveying the core ideas of philosophy in an easily understandable way to younger and older readers alike. I hoped that this would be something similar. After 52 pages and 7 chapters I put it aside.

Father and child on a trip, a fairytale narrative in a very simple style. Not badly written, if you don’t mind the simple tone. A story within a story. I had issues with the father and disliked him a lot, but that‘s on me. Not my kind of book.

I'm glad I stuck with this one, despite early misgivings, as it turned out to be rather good.

It was well-crafted, philosophical, thought-provoking and above everything immense fun to read. Gaarder takes you on a journey and keeps you entertained to the very last page.
