This book was so so so depressing at first. I wanted to stop it like 3/4 of the way through because I couldn't bare how sad it was. Something about Luke being mistreated by the students and teachers, and having no one to turn to just made me sympathize for him.

The book did end up becoming not so depressing, and more interesting. I so did not expect this book to take the turns it did. Awesome!

Poor Luke! It’s so hard to see these kids struggling to understand their place in the world when they aren’t doing anything wrong but are illegal. So amazing to see him growing into his knowledge of right and wrong.

This was pretty dull compared to the first one. I already have the 3rd one checked out so I'll probably read that but may end after that one. At least they're short and quick reads.

I liked this one more than the first tbh. Mr. Talbot slaps. Jason is a cunt. Love that Luke planted a garden at the end. Very curious to see where this series goes!

Plot summary:
Luke (under the alias Lee Grant) is enrolled at a private school. He befriends a kid named Jason who turns out to be a traitor and turns in kids at the school who reveal themselves to him as being shadow born or having information. Jen’s dad, Mr. Talbot, who works for the population police, helps Luke from afar. When Jason tries to turn Luke and the others in, Mr. Talbot saves the day by faking all their records. At the end, Mr. Talbot and the principal of the school (Mr. Hendricks) meet with Luke. Mr. Hendricks reveals his school isn’t for children with special needs, but a school for shadow children under cover. Luke stays at the school.

This book was a bit slower and more repetitive, but I still really enjoyed it. I wish the plot would’ve picked up a little faster and the conflict would’ve last a bit longer, but overall it was still enjoyable. Though it did feel a bit like a filler episode because it didn’t have as much conflict as one would expect. It was well written like the first and it was nice to see how Luke developed his own identity in the end and started to find a way to make a difference.
