Listened to the Graphic Audio production of the book. I’d give this 2.5 stars if possible.
My biggest qualm is not unique to this series; having read “The Black Prism” by the same author, it seems Brent Weeks simply cannot write women well. In this book, women are only seen as strong for their desirability or their ability to use said sexual appeal to manipulate others.
Another qualm is a common one for this series: “wetboy” is simply not a term I can take seriously.
There were a couple of times I felt a character’s actions or arguments had gaping holes in logic, but I suppose under duress it’s reasonable that some doesn’t see the irrationality of their behavior.
Otherwise, it was okay. I didn’t find the magic system particularly appealing, but some characters had interesting arcs. There didn’t seem to be much growth for most, though.
