I like these kind of books a lot. This one in particular feels a bit like the male counterpart of Celeana Sardothian from the Throne of Glass series (sorry I read Sarah J. Maas her series first). I love the mystery, magic and assassins are combined in this story. I'm really looking forward to read the rest of the series!
I really wanted to love this book (especially after spending last year drooling over the Lightbringer), but I just couldn’t feel myself inside the world of Night Angel. Maybe the times have changed since this was written (there are no kickass female characters and I’m struggling to read books without them). But it is a pleasant fantasy book and it probably gets better as the books go on - it does take a while to start and the whole book feels like a setup for something more, rather than a complete thing in itself.
Excellent book. What an epic scope! The book is great as a stand alone story, with lots of open end making you eager for the next one.
Rating clarification: it's 3.5 stars
I liked this book and I'll definitely read the following instalment, however there are some negative points for me as well.
I like the idea of following the shadows instead of the light and showing that actually at times grey is much lighter than what's supposed to be white...
I liked the evolution of Kylar as a character and also most of the secondary characters, even the evil ones ;o)
However I believe there are quite a few holes in the plot. I don't like info duping, but I like to somewhat be able, or at least have some hints about the general plot or backstory, and in this book quite a few things that come out of the blue without any previous hint and I went like...what? where was this explained or hinted at before? Who are these people? Why has nobody talked about them before?
So I'll definitely read the next book looking for those clues

so good! just what I needed to get out of my reading slump! this book had a lot of terminology and names you had to remember but once you get past that, the story is worth it!
I read this once in college and revisited it when my husband started trudging through it. In revisiting it, I realized that 20 year-old me put up with a hell of a lot more shit writing, shit characterization, flat-out sexist portrayals of women and men than 30-year-old me is willing to do. The writing itself actually wasn't bad, hence the reason I give this two stars.
Edit 2023: taking away that extra star because I contradicted myself up there and BW does not get nearly enough shit for the way he writes women compared to the loads of female authors that get hate. I’m guilty of this as well. I hear his Lightbringer series isn’t any better either. So fuck off with that.
