This Is Water is a sizable and straightforward guide on how to live compassionately and, as DFW puts it, how to “get to thirty or fifty without wanting to shoot yourself in the head.” I’ve read this twice and its message gets engraved in my head deeper and deeper each time. DFW’s witty approach to a topic most people would typically ignore or disregard is something I find very admirable since he takes a relatively boring topic and it makes it not only readable and engaging but really and truly useful as well. “No bullshit,” DFW once said about Camus’s writing style, and I must say the same about DFW’s (at least here… let’s forget about his novels for a second!) For a postmodern author this is extremely well-paced, precise, and needed in a generation like ours.
