This is the only commencement speech that David Foster Wallace ever gave. It is presented here almost as a book of poetry, which I think makes it a little bit more readable. Very profound, very wise and very sweet. I read it in one sitting ... in the bathtub (which seems very appropriate).

"This is not a matter of virtue — it’s a matter of my choosing to do the work of somehow altering or getting free of my natural, hardwired default setting, which is to be deeply and literally self-centered, and to see and interpret everything through this lens of self."

Of course I've heard of David Foster Wallace, unfortunately mostly for his suicide a few years back and how devastated people were... but I'm surprised to find that I've never (to my knowledge) read anything by him. This little book jumped out at me at the library. It's hardly a book, more like an essay, with about one sentence per page -- which at first seemed odd and perhaps money-grubbing by the publishers, except that it slowed down my reading so I could really enjoy each phrase. I am so glad I read it in this format, rather than an e-book or online all jumbled together.

I loved it and will certainly re-read it a few more times before it goes back to the library. Even more significantly, reading "This is Water" prompted me to read the Rolling Stone articles by David Lipsky, read DFW's cruise ship essay in Harpers (just brilliant), watch the (excerpted) YouTube video from the commencement speech, and add Infinite Jest and some others to my Goodreads "to read" lists.

While I read this book I watched a meter maid give a ticket to a truck in front of the coffee shop I was at. I could have gone outside, dramatically apologized and claimed the car as my own but I didn’t and I regret it. Next time I will because choosing what to pay attention to is the power that my college education emboldened me to possess.
