With amazing narration that enhanced the fairytale vibes, this comprises 7 stories:
Story 1 : The Mirror and its Fragments
Story 2 : A Little Boy and a Little Girl
Story 3 : The Flower Garden of the Woman who knew Magic
Story 4 : A Prince and a Princess
Story 5 : The Little Robber Girl
Story 6 : The Lapland Woman and Finland Woman
Story 7 : The Snow Queen's Palace

This was the first fairy tale I've read with Christian undertones.
Due to its length, it was fleshed out but included common tropes like the hero's journey, the power of love and faith and innocence, the triumph of good over evil.
The ending also wrapped up the tale sensibly with the journey having aged Kai and Gerda.

Strange, delightful.

I can definitely see how this influenced The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe and perhaps even George MacDonald's The Golden Key. A good tale. Disney claims this story as the basis for Frozen...but Frozen resembles this story only in the most basic of ways.

This was short and sweet and weird and disturbing all in one. I grew up with the Russian film from 1960s and can't remember reading the story itself until today. So many things, especially concerning the little robber girl are incredibly macabre, but somehow as a child it made totally sense to me what was happening. And that's why I give this fairy tale such a high rating, it brings me back my childhood memories when nonsense made a lot of sense actually and fantasy didn't have any borders.
Also, the illustrations by. Sanna Annukka in this edition are incredibly amazingly awesome and I will stare at these a lot of times in the future days to come for sure!

I will listen to anything narrated by Katherine Kellgren.  Anything.  Her narration was my favorite thing about this story but it was a good, quick winter read that I had never gotten around to as a child.
