I didn’t find this book very interesting, I think because the topic of acting and plays doesn’t excite me but everything was.m very well written and detailed so it was like a movie in my mind as I was listening to the audio book. Meryl Streep has a lovely voice which added to the experience

Maybe my favorite Ann Patchett novel. It’s summer 2020 on a cherry farm in Michigan, and Lara tells her three daughters the story of the summer she dated a famous movie star named Peter Duke while they pick cherries. There was so much to like about this book: a young woman being discovered by a Hollywood producer, the intensity of summer stock theater, a tragic love affair, references to Our Town by Thornton Wilder, moving meditations on memory and motherhood. It captures the feel of that pandemic summer without overdoing it and brilliantly weaves the two timelines together, each so engrossing or perhaps simply so seamlessly interwoven that I never minded switching from one to the other.

As a bonus, I listened to the audiobook on a road trip with my sister. Meryl Streep’s reading, as you might expect, was fantastic, and whenever we wanted, we paused to discuss plot points or simply to digest the drama and emotion together. Can’t imagine a better way to take in this book.
