Twain gone uber-cynical. I'm usually a fan of his writing, but this book (written toward the end of his life & after a series of financial & emotional trials) culminates with a hopeless view of life. No god, no eternity, and life as nothingness. Intriguing, but sad :/

Idk what possessed Mark Twain to wake up one day and cook but it's probably in my top 5 pieces of classic literature ever. Such a unique interpretation of Satan and I've yet to find anything that trumps Twain's vision. Criticism of religion or not, the version of Satan presented here is such a refresher from the brimstone and fire esc backdrop many artists use to portray the antichrist. I wish Twain touched upon darker topics such as he did in this work, because he really has a knack for being serenely horrifying when he wants to be.
