Pretty good! It's halfway between a coffee-table book and a book you'd want to read-through. I did the latter, and, well, it isn't a masterpiece in terms of writing - lacks continuity, often uses lingo without definition - but it makes up for that with the gorgeous typesetting and examples.

Great book! Fascinating history of a font that surrounds us more than we realize.

Five stars for the subject matter and writing, but one star removed for the teeny-tiny red and blue captions for the examples. Read this in good light and have your cheaters on, or you'll miss some of the most interesting tidbits in the book.

As a history of a Futura, this book excels. The wide range of illustrations and examples was very informative, and serves as a thorough sampling of how this font has been and could be used.

I think that more comparison to other fonts, similar or different, could have better highlighted features of Futura. Later in the book, the author shows some Kabel that could easily be mistaken for Futura, and I realized I couldn't tell the difference (maybe I just didn't read carefully enough early on?). More examples contrasting Futura to other similar fonts could help me better make accurate identifications in the wild.

All in all, a quick, thorough, and enjoying visual history.

This was a good, interesting read about the historical use of the Futura typeface and its impact on culture. If you’re interested in design or typography, this will definitely be up your alley.

I do think that for those less familiar with those topics, this book might be less approachable but it still has some really interesting case studies of how typography has affected political campaigns, brands, and even NASA!

Biblia każdego typografa. Bardzo dokładna, świetnie zwizualizowana a zarazem śmieszna. Teraz wszędzie widzę Futurę.

Very nice, quick dive into the history of Futura. Inspiring to read about, and getting excited about typography again. This book really highlights how much influence and presence that a set of specific alphabetic shapes can pervade everyday life.

I’ve been anxiously awaiting the publication of this book for the past year. I’m not an educated graphic designer - but I gained some interest in fonts and design from working on my high school literary magazine. And Doug’s book help bring that nostalgia into my life again by detailing the history of a font with historical topics I’ve already found fascinating — such as Nazi Germany and the early NASA program (now I know that my love of the Apollo program also has some association with NASA’s use of Futura in their publications and labels). There’s bound to be a connection to Futura that will get you hooked on the topic.

It’s a quick read, clear and entertaining, and very satisfying to flip through as well. This history buff got a kick out of it.
