I have been a fan of Brooke Montgomery since her Kennedy Fox days. This is the fire solo project i have read from her and it was so good. I took to it like i was dehydrated and got my first taste of water. I loved the plot and the characters. My Favorite was Ayden. He was so lovable. I loved how strong Laney was. This prequel was such a great introduction to the Sugarland Creek series.

This was a solid 4 star book. I like the second chance romance, which is a trope I am not normally a fan of. I really liked Ayden and Laney both individually and together, they just fit together so well. I also love their daughter Serena, she was chatty and a bright light. As it was a novella, I wasn't expecting the stuff with Ayden's dad and it did go a bit crazy at the end. There was one moment at the end which was a bit far fetched and you very much has to suspend your disbelief with. However, the writing was so good and it set up the first actual novel (book 1) in this series really well and I am so intrigued by the couple that it will follow. Overall, a really good time, even with the unbelievable moments.

for the most part this was off page and mentioned as things that happened in the past, however there are a few flash backs/reflections on the events.theabibliophobe's review against another edition

While the story itself is good, the ending is weird. The book spoils itself at the 80%mark and then spends the rest of the book talking about what happened that lead up to the spoiled ending. It brought the book to a halt and there was no tension or satisfaction since we were told what happened before the book tells us how it happened.

hey quick question? what the fuck was that
this started out as a very sweet story, but after 25% in it quickly derailed
The writing style was so so, and i skimmed over most of the smut.
the one thing I couldn’t understand. Is when Ayden (MMC) says “my father put me in a hospital for a week” (IN THE EPILOGUE” Laney (FMC) is trying to plead to him to stay, even though his father PUT HIM IM THE HOSPITAL FOR A WEEK!!!
also the characters? no personality at all.
if you are going to pick a serious topic to base the main conflict of your novel around, you should make sure to give value to that serious topic!!!
having a main character who is running away from a violent abusive father and then treating it like he abandoned his girlfriend is absolutely INSANE
This book did not know what it wanted to be and it was very frustrating how the main male characters trauma was not handled well or like at all.
and the plot twist? girl what in the fuck. i’m
so mad
