DCeased by Tom Taylor

Though the premise of this mini event is much less original than the video game-based Injustice: Gods Among Us series Tom Taylor wrote so brilliantly, this book still has a lot of the best character tones and one-liners from that series. Taylor also heavily borrows from Tom King when including Miracle Man and Big Barda in the story. Harley Quinn and Green Arrow shine as they did in the original Injustice story. Overall, this was a fun, quick read.

DCeased was an excellent summer series full of blockbuster fun. This is the kind of book that reminds you why reading hero comics can still be fun.

I’m not exaggerating when I say this was the best comic book I’ve ever read, seriously. My jaw dropped like every 2 pages, I didn’t want it to end. This book has everything I could ever ask for; amazing art, amazing writing, humour, romance, and extreeeeeemely dark and sad moments! Tom Taylor is and always will be my favourite person in the entire industry, and the way that he crafted this story is absolutely phenomenal. You owe it to yourself as a comic book fan to read this, and the rest of Tom Taylor’s books as well

I adored this author’s previous otherworld comic so I just assumed zombies plus dc characters I love would be a win but unfortunately, this one was just too sad for me.

This book broke my heart! Everything I’ve read by Tom Taylor I’ve loved. The artwork was amazing as well. I loved the idea of a virus that spreads through the internet. Oh did I mention this broke my heart!?!?

I REALLY don’t like zombies, but there were enough jokes and enough hope here for me to have a good time.

Enjoyed this more than I expected. I didn’t expect to have as much emotional investment in the characters since this is just an alternate version of the regular DC universe, but the deaths mattered.

The way characters die also makes sense. You don’t see these well-known characters doing things they wouldn’t normally do.

The thing that pleases me most in this story is that it does end with hope.

☞ | MOTIVATION FOR READING

With the announcement that a Doctor Strange / Scarlett Witch movie was in the works (controversial to mention under a DC graphic novel, I know ) I was in the mood for something dark. Something...zombieish. This filled that urge.

☞ | QUICK THOUGHTS

I love reading mini series or spin offs that don't have a proper effect on canon. The author's aren't as restrained. They take more risks and allow for experimentation. Sometimes it pays off, sometimes it doesn't. This time it did. The stakes felt very, very real while I was reading it and it was comforting to know that [literally any of the characters that died] were technically still alive and kicking where the rest of society was concerned.

☞ | X WITHOUT BEING X

full of action without being unemotional
full of classic characters without being overkill
full of death without feeling meaningless
full of despair without ....

Entertaining read but it mostly showed me how much I don’t know about the DC world.

In hindsight, this really WASN’T the best comic to read at the height of a pandemic...
