Four somewhat unenthusiastic stars.

These stories are clever, and well-told, yet still somehow didn't pull me in as I would have liked.

Fantastic collection of stories of fantastical realism. These are substantially developed short stories with full sense of place, character, and time - even when time doesn't work the way we think it should. The style and undertones are definitely 1950's French - every character has a sense of being in their own personal world.

Perhaps most surprising is I'd never heard of Ayme before. Shortly into the first story I realized I wanted to read more of his writing, and that belief didn't waver throughout the book - and lives on after.

I learned of The Man Who Walked Through Walls while researching Paris and hearing about the
monument honoring the author in Montmartre. So I purchased Monsieur Ayme's collection of short stories titled with his most well known story.

The stories are whimsical, sometimes about time travel of some sort, but with an underlying serious tone. As I am writing this in the time of Covid 19 lockdowns, this phrase about "the war" stuck with me: The secret trials [the governments] held came up with nothing very useful...In the meantime, their peoples were getting bored. Civilians of all nations were growing gloomy and ill-tempered.

I was reading this when visiting Paris (I stayed in Montmartre, just few blocks away from the "real" le passe-muraille) and couldn't help smiling all the time. Such a delicious short story; absurd, funny, apt. I wish there were more of these.
