Human Acts will astound you in a ways that you will never expect. Kang’s writing in this novel is stunningly layered and structured with the themes she is exploring in ways that appear to be seamless. There are lines that seem so simple, yet when paired with the context of the novel take on a delicate and haunting whole new life. Throughout the novel Kang is exploring this idea of human connection, and how that connection is altered and changed with loss. Using the student uprising in South Korea we also see this conversation about guilt, as several intersections stories deal with the death of a young high school boy who was brutally murdered by his own government. Each person takes ownership that doesn’t belong to them as they process what has happened here. Along the way Kang asks the reader to ponder the very connection our bodies have to our souls.

“I started too late, I thought. I should have come before they dug up the floor. Before the whole frontage of the Provincial Office was masked with scaffolding, with signs reading ‘Under Construction'. Before the majority of the gingko trees, which had borne mute witness to it all, were uprooted. Before the hundred-and-fifty-year-old pagoda tree withered and died.
But I'm here now.”
An absolute must read. Han Kang’s Human acts is a work of fiction based on real events during the Gwangju uprising in South Korea in 1980. We follow the horror through several chapters that depict the lives of individuals impacted directly and indirectly by the massacre.
