Really enjoyed this one. So many different emotions. Great visuals of a faerie world. The descriptions are fantastical. As with most of LKH's work, I want to really to just spill the beans about everything that's happened, but for those that haven't read it yet, I really really really don't want to give away any spoilers.

Let's just say, very emotional book. Very good book. Very, well, just a great continuation of Merry's life.

Re-read review:

I guess all the sex in the last book meant that this one gets none until about halfway through? I wish Hamilton could balance it as well as she did in the first few books of this series.

It's a harder read, because of the ending. The ballsiness of the Seelie court is...painfully familiar *coughcough*WHITEPEOPLE*cough*. But still well worth it, as important plot advances absolutely happen in this book.

3 1/2
Well I knew this was a cliffhanger ending.
Spoiler Meredith is saved from King Taranis and is taken to a hospital. Merry doesn't know if she's been raped by Taranis, Frost has been turned into his stag form and we don't know if he will ever come back to Merry, we don't know if the Queen will try to torture more of her men, whether the queen will be ticked as she almost always is, or whether Merry will recover. She is pregnant and has multiple dads, like what is the queen going to say about that?
Nope this was 1/2 a story the start, so I can only state that I don't know how it will turn out or whether it will be a 2 star or 5 star overall read. I can say it was heading for 3 or 4 as it was a bit of a drag here and there with repeats. It was a lot of talking about feeling, especially Reese. A long lead up for the Goblin twins and their turn to have sex
Spoiler and that didn't even happen,
so disappointment after a lot of hype.

The obvious craziness of the King of the seelie and really the possible craziness of the Queen of the unseelie, comes full force here. The queen is sadistic and masochistic towards her men and it is on full display.

~*~Book Description~*~

I am Meredith Gentry, princess and heir apparent to the throne in the realm of faerie, onetime private investigator in the mortal world. To be crowned queen, I must first continue the royal bloodline and give birth to an heir of my own. If I fail, my aunt, Queen Andais, will be free to do what she most desires: install her twisted son, Cel, as monarch . . . and kill me.

My royal guards surround me, and my best loved–my Darkness and my Killing Frost–are always beside me, sworn to protect and make love to me. But still the threat grows greater. For despite all my carnal efforts, I remain childless, while the machinations of my sinister, sadistic Queen and her confederates remain tireless. So my bodyguards and I have slipped back into Los Angeles, hoping to outrun the gathering shadows of court intrigue. But even exile isn’t enough to escape the grasp of those with dark designs.

Now King Taranis, powerful and vainglorious ruler of faerie’s Seelie Court, has leveled accusations against my noble guards of a heinous crime–and has gone so far as to ask the mortal authorities to prosecute. If he succeeds, my men face extradition to faerie and the hideous penalties that await them there. But I know that Taranis’s charges are baseless, and I sense that his true target is me. He tried to kill me when I was a child. Now I fear his intentions are far more terrifying.

~*~My Review~*~

OMG! What a great Merry Gentry book!

Merry and her men are finally back in LA. But that doesn't stop the threats coming her way now does it? Hell-no. Freaking King is gone mad and wants Merry for his wife, the Queen is gone sadistic on one of the guards because she didn't talk with Merry first about rumors, Frost....dear lord, Frost....OMG!! I can't even handle it!

Such a great read. Some great news in this book! But of course it isn't just a simple thing...it's gotta be all complex and shit, lol.

As with most of LKH's work, I want to really to just spill the beans about everything that's happened, but for those that haven't read it yet, I really really really don't want to give away any spoilers.

Let's just say, very emotional book. Very good book. Very, well, just a great continuation of Merry's life.

I have been waiting and waiting and waiting for Meredith to get pregnant already and for there to be some forward movement of plot in these books. Also, I was getting tired of the strung together scenes of sex...new magic...more sex...some more new magic.

This book really toned down on the sex, thank goodness. And, to be fair, the plot did inch forward infinitesimally. But this book was quite boring. It was a bunch of mirror conversations. First Merry talks to Taranis is the mirror for eleventy-billion pages. Then she talks to Andais for eleventy-more-billion pages. The she talks to the goblins. And then we hear about some more new creatures her sex has brought to life.

In the course of these conversations we get more of Bat Shit Crazy Andais, something of Skeevy Perv Crazy Taranis and of course there is Just Psycho Crazy Cel lurking off in the background. Talk about tedious characters. If Merry is so dang powerful why doesn't she off some of these people already. I do agree with Andais, Merry has turned into a wimp.

I remember the first book when she got her hand of power and used it. Actually, I remember the first book and so much happened just in that one book. Le Sigh.

A good installment as it gives some hearty backstory to one of my fav's Frost.

A remarkable lack of sex in this entry in the Merry Gentry series. I didn't miss it, and I think the book was actually one of the strongest in the series.

I didn't realize that this was another of Hamilton's series books. I was out of audiobooks and going on a big car trip so I picked up what I found. This book isn't bad, but it's like Hamilton is writing for NaNoWriMo - repeating herself in different ways just to get the wordcount up. Also, the most vital importance is placed on where Merideth's lovers are in relation to her body during important court meetings. But, as my mother says, that works well because if you zone out or skip a few pages, you haen't missed much. The sex scenes were few, but they got progressively better. I think that listening to rather than reading this book was a mistake, although a lovely escapist one. Also, I like it a bit more (abrupt ending, hello!) knowing now that it is part of a series.
