Weeeelllll, it was good, just not for me.

I think the story is really well put together. The setting, time period, magic, and culture are all fascinating. The ending was enticing enough to want the next book asap.

It just didn't really stir my emotions. I think I had a difficult time with the stylistic writing.
So it was good, but not enough to keep reading the series. I would recommend for readers who like Asian culture.

Like Game of Thrones set in feudal Japan. It starts out slow, but when it picks up it really takes hold and you won't be able to put it down!

To be quite honest, I was thoroughly disappointed with this novel. I LOVED tales of the otori as a child, loved loved loved them, so I picked this up with great expectations and hopes to be gripped in the same way. But I wasn't. It was slow to start, slow to continue and slow to end. I found myself skimming very heavily just to finish it. The real problem with this story was that it was hard to like any of the characters, they didn't feel all that fleshed out or real and thus I didn't have any connection with the story.

This is another amazing epic tale from Lian Hearn. It is as sweeping and engaging as "The Tales of the Otori" with many characters readers will come to love.

If you’re looking for a high fantasy book with in-depth world-building and complex, nuanced characters this ain’t it, my friend.

If you’re looking for a mediocre read, nothing to difficult to get your head around, and you have zero interest in becoming attached to anyone fictional in the near future, I say have at it.

It was very flat. That’s about as much as I’m willing to say about it. I’ve finished it feeling no particular strong feelings of any kind, which is a shame. The story was intriguing but the characters were cookie-cutter types with little merit. I have no desire whatsoever to read its sequel.

Je m’attendais pas à autant accrocher, bcp de personnages mais le style d’écriture est super fluide.
On sait par trop où l’on va mais l’univers reste well written. Morally gray main character qui refroidi tout le monde à la fin du tome 1.
+ Bonus point for the cover.

Easy reading. Interesting world building and weird magic. A lot is happening for different characters and unfortunately, it doesn’t give us time to connect with them and with the story. Also nice cover, that’s what caught my attention.

I didn't enjoy this book as much as I had hoped. I thoroughly enjoyed the Tales of the Otori series and may have higher hopes for this one than was warranted.
