4.5 stars! I really enjoyed this delightful story about The Girl Who Drank the Moon. Barnhills characters were lovely and multifaceted and I think the world that she built is truly imaginative and complex. I appreciate that hope and joy are celebrated while acknowledging that doing away with all sorrow is also not the answer because grief and loss is part of love. A delightful fantasy.

Such a clever and interesting book. I only wish that the pacing was better. At times, it dragged on in parts that really should have been edited more.
The prose is also so pretty, without being excessive.

Defence Against the Dark Arts (E): Gilderoy's memory charm - first book that you remembered just now from your TBR
Mythathon 2019 - Team Hades
Hades also owns a chair of forgetfulness: Read a book you’ve been shelving for far too long
I love stories that have fantasy and magic elements in it. Plus point, there is a huge, scary yet loving swamp monster, a witch, a childlike dragon, a sorrow eater and a girl who drank the moon. With such amazing characters, what could I ask more? The writing was also amazing and poetic.
However, the pacing was just so slow. Nothing happens at all in the 2/3 of the book. It feels more like a set up for whatever is coming after that. And to be honest, I don't think that is necessary. Like I mentioned earlier, I really love how poetic and lyrical the writing can be. But it gets repetitive to the point it started to sound annoying. I was so bored because nothing happens. I get that this is a middle-grade book, but stopped with the "she is here" and "sorrow is dangerous" already. I genuinely think that I will probably like this book more if it is shorter and less repetitive. Also, this book can be very descriptive. Sometimes it's okay to let people have the freedom to imagine whatever is going on. You don't have to descript everything so detailly, it just lost the fun and magic especially for a fantasy or fairy tales.
Anyway, I was not invested in the story. It is still a decent book, it does have a great message for children. I guess it wasn't for me.
