crying. never looking at a paper bird the same way ever again.
This is the most beautiful thing I've read all year. Just stunning. The world is rich and layered and creative, the magic is dazzling and clever and rooted in sorrow, the characters break your heart in the best possible ways. The story feels familiar because of its fairy tale mood, but everything about it is wildly unique. I adored this. Please, please read it!
I've been wanting to read the book since it was released, but it was always checked out from the library and it was too expensive to buy. When Audible had a special I bought it within the hour. Just goes to show that you can get good things during a sale.
This book was a delight to listen to as I thought the narrator did a great job distinguishing whose voice she was doing, and the writing to this middle-grade fantasy was wonderful! The story was a 4.5 in my opinion. The characters are wonderfully dynamic, most of them likeable, the others are dislikeable from the beginning until the end, and all of them could be real people despite the magical elements of monsters, witches, and dragons throughout the book. This book may be for middle schoolers but the lessons it teaches about love, sorrow, death, and life are teachable to all ages. I want to show it to everyone to read even those that say they “don’t like fantasy” as I believe this would be the exception for them.
I'm so glad that I'll have this book for the rest of my life; I might even buy a physical copy so I can have the beautiful cover. Honestly, you can’t go wrong whether you buy the audio, print, or ebook version of this book. I’m positive you’ll like it.

All the stars! Even though this book was written for middle schoolers, so was Harry Potter and we all know how many adults have read them. I loved this book. I loved the way it was written. I loved the characters especially Fyrian. Such a great escape from the real world. It was lovely and entertaining. If you like books about magic, you will love this book no matter your age.

The 2017 Newberry Award winner, this children's tale, like The Lion King, has something for both children and the adults who take the time to read it. Well paced and with enough action to keep you enticed with this story of how important (mis)communication can be....

“There is magic IN starlight, of course. Moonlight however. That is a different story. Moonlight IS magic. Ask anyone you like.”
Absolutely loved this book from start to finish. Can not find the right words to describe just how amazing this book is.
