3.5 stars - Fantastic premise and story, but a lot of repetition and no plot surprises. Either entire plot and end resolution is guessable from the first 10% of the book. I still enjoyed reading it, but felt it could have been about 1/3 shorter.

I got this on a whim as an audiobook and enjoyed it. It’s definitely low stakes and didn’t fully capture my attention but the characters were sweet and the premise for the story was interesting.

I grabbed this one because it was the award winner from last year and I wanted to be able to recommend it to the students in my library. It is a fantasy. It took me some time to get acquainted with the characters as I was trying to figure out how the story would unfold. It is a long book and I think it drags a bit in the middle but I was happy with the ending. It is one that I think my students will also enjoy.

couldn't quite get into the story.

I knew this was a Newberry Medal book so I had expectations! And it definitely met my expectations.

This is a story of misconception, magic, and simply love. It's about the sacrifices we make for love, for those we truly love. It's about the lies that also make us blind to the reality around us.

Although this may be a children's book, the lesson it teaches is timeless. The plot, although predictable is played out well.

Also, I listened to this as an audiobook and found the voices intertaining

“This a true story. What other kinds of stories are there?”

This story, while simple in its writing, is undeniable in its message. Carried along by beautiful worldbuilding and distinctive characters, this is a tale of wonder, hope and overcoming sorrow. And the power of the stories we tell ourselves and others.

There are things that everyone knows. Everyone knows many things and there is never a need to ask questions about things that everyone knows of course. Don't question the stories you are told as all stories are true and nothing can ever change so don't even try. Bravery will only get you killed.

This book is amazing. I am impressed I found it in a local Little Free Library. I had a hard time encouraging myself to pick it up and read it simply because I didn't want it to end. The characters are beautiful and the setting is so beautifully described. There is hard work, pain, trauma, sacrifice, love, laughter, in addition to fantastical characters and imagery. Great early to middle reader book and would be an excellent choice as a read-aloud.
