The fact that I can give this 0 stars is incredible.

Anyways! I read this and a plan on skimming through Go Ask Alice so I have some context for the book I actually want to read: Unmask Alice by Rick Emerson. I'm looking forward to reading the exposé that shows Sparks for the person she truly was.

Yeah, I read this with a bias, but once you read the introduction, the dedication, and the first entry, you realize the book really truly is crap.

It was addictively terrifying. I expected it to be like Go Ask Alice and it definitely wasnt! It was strange and way beyond my understanding of occults but yet I couldnt put it down.... It scared me more than I enjoyed reading it.

This book is in the same fashion as the popular “Go Ask Alice.” And like “Go Ask Alice” this book deals with drug abuse and the occult. The book takes place in the 1960’s. If you want to warn teens away from drug use, this book is a good place to start.

I feel awful for the family of Alden Barrett, the actual teen whose diary was mangled by Beatrice Sparks into this nonsensical mash of cultural appropriation and cautionary tale about the dangers of drugs :(

It was so hard trying to get invested in this book. The narrator wasn’t likable and none of the characters were fleshed out, and the plot was detached and random. I tried to give it the benefit of the doubt by researching this journal, and from what I’ve found, this is a near completely fictional work very loosely based on the original journal.
That really affected my opinion and made it even harder to read because
1) I can’t even believe the grievance this was on the deceased family, by accusing the narrator Alden of such things
and 2) if you’re that committed to making up a story, why not at least write it well? This was so hard to trudge through and really lacked in most areas. It’s a real shame that this is how Alden’s memory holds, as it’s nearly impossible to find a copy of his journal that his brother published years later. But I’ll be on the lookout.

Read it in high school. Utterly forgettable. In fact, I don't remember a thing. Read a few reviews to catch up and the only thing I know for certain is that I was quite unimpressed.
