I really wanted to give a 5 star review because the story itself was gripping. I didn’t want to put the book down and I really enjoyed the perspective of each of the key characters but the ending lacked closure for me. The book was still enjoyable overall but I needed a little more.

Great read. Very interesting insight into the Quakers. Kept my attention throughout and found it very well written.

this wasn’t so much of a mystery as it was a story about tragedy, forgiveness and moving forward. a very character-driven book, with multiple POVs shifting occasionally. a lot of people liked this, mostly because it was somewhat emotionally charged, but i didn’t find myself invested in it as much. neither the story, nor the characters.

for one, it was too long. there’s a lot of details in chunky paragraphs that are boring, and sometimes useless to the story. there wasn’t a real build-up to any reveal, despite a murder being the core of it, but even that felt flat and uninteresting. i enjoyed reading jonah’s occasional POV more than the others, because it wasn’t as passive, and gave action to the story, even though what he was leading to was obvious from the start.

i can’t say i hated this, bc i didn’t, but i wasn’t as connected to the characters, or the overall storyline as much as i wanted, which made it all feel boring to me. i just kept waiting for the last page, tbh.

Beautiful writing! Definitely a slow burn read. I loved the intricacies and emotional depth. It’s marketed as a thriller, or at least seems like it’s going to be, but I feel it’s more dark contemporary. Not scary or super suspenseful. If you like family dramas, you’ll love it.

Brilliant heartwrenching book. Highly recommend.
