I really wish I would’ve DNF'd this book because it felt so boring. I wasn't invested in any of the characters, which made me not care about how things turned out. The mystery and thriller aspects just didn't work for me; there was no suspense, and the plot focused more on the characters than the mystery itself. I also noticed a lack of diversity, missing out on some important conversations, with only one offhand comment about it. I’ve read better takes on similar topics in books like "The Mothers" by Brit Bennett or "Red at the Bone," by Jacqueline Woodson even though those are literary fiction. This book felt more like surface-level literary fiction, and while I understand what the author was trying to do, it just missed the mark. It could have been much more thrilling with some twists and turns, but it ended up feeling repetitive. I'm not giving up on the author, but this one didn't work for me.

É a minha primeira vez a ler um livro de tais géneros mas não senti que fosse de todo a minha praia ou que de tal forma me causasse um desejo intenso de ler para desvendar o mistério. No entanto, achei bonita a maneira como a autora descreve a maternidade, a intensidade de emoções que a mesma traz e a infelicidade que pode causar a outrem.

I did not love this as much as I loved The Push, but that's only because The Push is my favorite book of all time. The writing is, of course, fantastic, and Ashley retains her title as queen of the gut-punch ending.
