When I tell you I hated this book, oh my god did I ever hate this book.

DNF @ 60% simply bc my Libby app lost track of where I was and I didn’t have not an inkling of motivation to figure it out and I think that’s very telling.

So dark in a good way. I love the way Audrain captures the complicated nuances of motherhood and the toll it takes on women. I think I liked this better than The Push!

such a let down after The Push

I really wish I would’ve DNF'd this book because it felt so boring. I wasn't invested in any of the characters, which made me not care about how things turned out. The mystery and thriller aspects just didn't work for me; there was no suspense, and the plot focused more on the characters than the mystery itself. I also noticed a lack of diversity, missing out on some important conversations, with only one offhand comment about it. I’ve read better takes on similar topics in books like "The Mothers" by Brit Bennett or "Red at the Bone," by Jacqueline Woodson even though those are literary fiction. This book felt more like surface-level literary fiction, and while I understand what the author was trying to do, it just missed the mark. It could have been much more thrilling with some twists and turns, but it ended up feeling repetitive. I'm not giving up on the author, but this one didn't work for me.
